First/Best ever Concert attended

Postby Laphroa1g » Sun Oct 11, 2009 9:51 pm

My first was Simple Minds at the NEC in 1989. They were supported by Gun who I just happen to be going to watch next month.

The best gig I've probably been to was Muse in 2007 at the MEN Arena. They REALLY know how to put on a show.

Anyone else?

First - David Bowie at Maine Road in 1987 - His Glass Spider Tour. History does not seem to have been kind to this period of Bowie's career but I did enjoy it at the time. I really did.

Best - Lest May when I finally got to see The Specials play live, in Leeds. Not only was it a brilliant gig I actually got to log it as a geocache!

You've just mentioned Muse - which are my biggest gig regret! I went to T in the Park in 2004 and was so excited about seeing David Bowie - but he didn't make it. So top of the bill on one stage were The Darkness and on the other stage were Muse. I hadn't heard much Muse at that point so I ended up watching the blummin' Darkness. Now I love Muse and I can't believe I missed them. Everyone who watched them that night said they were amazing.

Best gig - Hmmmm. The Pixies at Manchester Arena in 2005 were amazing - but that could be because I was so excited, having thought I'd never see them.
Either that or Bruce Springsteen at Old Trafford last year. Wow!

First gig. Crown of Thorns (supported by Siam) in Workington and I can't even remember which year. 1993 or 1994 I think. It wasn't by choice. My friend at the time used to do gig reviews for the local paper and this one was on my birthday so he took me with his free guest ticket. It wasn't very good.
My first big gig was the Stone Roses at Sheffield Arena in 2005. They were supported by Black Grape. Closely followed by the Wildhearts at Portsmouth Pyramids a few months later (supported by Real TV). Hey...it's all coming back to me!!

We were at the MEN for Muse in 2007, top gig, but that has to be beaten by Radiohead in a large tent in Warrington in 2000, and by Elbow, last year at the Liverpool Students Union (small-ish venue, and we were 1 row from the front) and a few weeks ago at the MEN (the last night of the latest tour, a great night!). :D

Just remembered another top gig - The Hold Steady at Manchester Academy. I can't remember if it was earlier this year, or it was last year but it was amazing. I would recommend going to see this band even if you're not a fan because they (particularly the singer) put everything into their performances. Fantastic.

First gig by a "name" band was Judas Priest at Southport Art Centre circa 1975ish. Best gig ever? oooh, one of Led Zeppelin at Knebworth 79, Rainbow's first tour '76, or early Whitesnake when they were a proper band and not into big hair. Blimey, I am getting old. :o

Metallica, Monsters of Rock somewhere in 1991, the awesome part came from me running into a mate in a crowd of 20000 or so that i hadnt seen for two years after moving halfway across the country.

AC/DC were grand that day as well :)

I was there...
AC/DC are/were quite possibly the most boring live band ever. Zero audience interaction

My first was Deacon Blue at G-MEX christmas 1989, what a great gig.

been lucky enough to catch Manic street preachers at Sheffield Octagon prior to the suicide of the guitarists and them going mainstream,

also DId rocking the Bowl june 1991 with The LAW, LITTLE ANGELS ( Toby Jepson is now lead singer of GUN), THUNDER, BRYAN ADAMS and......

ZZ TOP who were just awsome. :D :D

more into classical concerts and opera now though for a cultured evening.

always regret missing Queen on their Kinda magic tour in 1986-87 was just too young. and then Freddie died. :(
Now an EX-Bargee, moved onto land,
Boat sold.....sad.

I was too but told my parents I was staying the night at a mates house. He did the same with his parents and we sneaked off to Piccadilly Gardens to catch the (organised) coach to the NEC to see the show. During the interval we were hanging around with some other lads from our school and we bumped into our Biology teacher Fred Talbot. He was as surprised to see us there as we were to see him.

I was not a massive Queen fan at the time but the show was just amazing and has to be one of the best I've ever been to :).

Ah - did not see the dates - it must have been the tour before that then as I'm sure I was in the 3rd or 4th year at the time and would never have been allowed to go as far as Birmingham if I'd have asked my parents.

I was 12/13 in 1986 just making my way through the schooling system and playing lots of rugby.

I saw Who on their first comeback at Party in the Park where they performed Quadraphenia. It was awsome!!

the Cast included

Gary Glitter as the rocker ( this was before all the revelations about his other activities, and whatever you think about that he put in a great show)
Stephen Fry as the hotel manager - Bell boy
and
Sir trevor Macdonald as the news reader.

Roger Daltrey took to the stage with an eyepatch as Gary glitter had caught him in the face with his microphone stand during rehersals.

that would have been 1997 i think in Hyde park

Eric clapton and Alanis morrisette also were on the bill

Suppose i have a great job in one respect as I get to work with most people mentioned so far ....
But I'm also too tired at the end of the day to bother watching most of them perform.
But after doing this job for 10 years, I have enjoyed a few:
Blondie ...Beyonce .....Il Divo (gasp) ...Muse ... amongst a few others.
The worst was Lady Gaga two days ago!

But I have never ever actually paid to go to a concert .... except Festivals.
So, Bon jovi (before anyone knew who Bon jovi was)..... springs to mind as being good and probably my first?

1st Concert ....Thin Lizzy at the Liverpool Empire on the Live & Dangerous Tour circa 1977..... 1st concert & they were brilliant. :D :D Followed that with a return visit to the Empire to see The Jam again, another great gig & memory
When I was at Uni, saw Duran Duran at the Student's Union, the week Planet Earth went into the charts ........ saw U2 at a big festival in a massive warehouse somewhere in Leeds circa 1980/81 - they'd not long released 'Boy'. That trip was memerable.... not because I saw U2, but because my mate & myself ended up spending the night in Leeds traiun station & bgetting the milk train back to Manchester :D

A few years ago I was working Liverpool Summer Pops (when it was the tent!! :D ) & saw Status Quo & The Australian Pink Floyd

Despite my reservations, both bands ROCKED

I really enjoy live music.... doesn't matter if its a tribute band, well known act or local group ....... if they sound good, that'll do
I take life with a pinch of salt, wedge of lime and a shot of tequila!
I Don't Do Hills..........(but exceptions may be made if chocolate cake is involved!!)

I think that my first concert would have been a Def Leppard mini-festival at Don Valley Stadium in 1993. They were supported by Thunder, Ugly Kid Joe and Terrorvision, and it was cracking the flags! :)

Best one... it's difficult to choose, even though I've not been to that many, but I'd probably say Arctic Monkeys supported by Amy Winehouse (just before she went totally off the rails), Supergrass and the Coral in 2007 at Old Trafford cricket ground. The only problem with that gig was the length of the queues at the bar (they were totally unprepared for the number of drinkers that were attending :D) and the price of beer when you got to the front.

Best concert I have ever been to (not that I have been to many compared to others on this forum) was Editors at Preston Guild Hall tonight. The sound system was the best I have ever heard despite being shockingly bad for both of the support bands. Editors played a 19 song set which lasted for just under two hours. Tonight was deffinetly £20 well spent.

Over the years I've been to a fair few concerts, bands such as Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, Manuskript, Jethro Tull, VNV Nation, etc, in large (NEC Arena) and small venues. The convert though that sticks in mind as the best was Wishbone Ash at the Limelight in Crewe. An absolutely fantastic gig in a cosy venue.

Well if there was a subject matter that might persuade me to join nwcaching, it probably had to be gigs ! Just looking at the previous logs has made me feel very nostalgic (though all references to Muse have left me feeling something else entirely).

First gig was the Stranglers in 1977, though I always prefer to say that the first band was Wire (as they were the support act) and they have retained rather more credibility. Best is always difficult - the 36 times I saw the Jam were probably strictly all in my top 36, but the Ramones at Camden Electric Ballroom in 1980 was pretty special. More recently (last May), the Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Chorlton Irish Club was a revelation to everyone including the band, who still seem to quote it as their best gig ever. Back to the sweaty pogo-ing days days of my late teens .... ahhh!
