Cache Recommendations - Keswick area

Postby matty1984 » Sat Mar 09, 2013 9:45 pm

Am visiting Cumbria in a few weeks to promote the 2013 Mega at GPS Training's open day in Mungrisdale. Hoping to spend a few days in the Keswick area walking, climbing and of course caching. Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for must do caches in the area?

Sometime since I've cached up that area, scanning through my finds, alot of the ones that come to mind look to have been long archived, whose being a Wainwright favourite Castle Crag - GCRERK, trail to the secret cave - GCWGQK. There are still alot of good ones in the area - GCK5H2 is an excellent drive by for the view

Blowing my own trumpet my series over High Rigg always gets rave reviews (GC1CGR9 is the first). The Barrowers who live in East Lancs like me have also put up three series around Keswick. One under High Rigg (GC2ZJJJ is the first). Another just east of Derwentwater (GC2TECY) and the third from Stonethwaite (GC3FF0D). All these 4 are excellent round walks taking 3 to 5 hours depending how fast you find the caches. There also umpteen drive-bys on the way to them that can make you too late to start the circuit you'd intended! All have free parking areas near the start although the Derwentwater one is small so you need to be very early or lucky. There's lots of caches near Grange (if you can find a parking place) which can make a nice walk but you'd have to find your own route.

Finally if you're a masochist and want to risk never being seen again you can walk the ridge from Ullscarf to Bleaberry Fell (GC24TAF) along easily the boggiest ridge in The Lakes picking up many Wainwrights. I must have been mad putting them up - please take some spare logs too as I cant get to them as often as they need replacing - Ullscarf in particular may be very wet. All the big tops in the area (Hellvellyn etc) have easily found caches in superb locations but to get a handful you'll need an 8 hour day.

Post something about the Mungisedale open day please. Love the area. Done all the few existing caches around there so some new ones would be nice. You also say climbing - assume you know which ones you want to do but if you need hints for these too I can let you have some in the low/medium grades.

Enjoy!

I've not done them yet but the Langstrath Valley series (eg GC3FF6B LV 16 - Tombola) looks like a good way to spend a day.

Hi All,

Anyone mind if I lift these recommendations and post them on a www.geocachetourist.com article for Keswick?

TIA,

Fine. I'm sure The Barrowers will be pleased to have their's on too. The Stonethwaite and Langstrath series are the same - one's the first and the other the last cache in the circuit.

This is my first time on the Forum and I would just like to thank Belbincolne for the mention of my 3 caching series in the Keswick area. The ‘Under the Riggs’ (UTR) one is a series of 12 caches. The Borrowdale Triangle (BT) is a series of 10 caches and Langstrath Valley series is 20 caches. The series laid by Belbincolne over the High Rigg, is a thoroughly good walk over a super little fell.

Other caches that look interesting, although I haven’t done them yet, are: Eagle Crag Viewpoint (GC3Y6GW), Eagle Crag (GC3Y6J1), Sergeants Crag (GC3Y6JH) and Chandravan Perekh’s Monument (GC3YA3Z). These caches were all laid by Moacky. The Viewpoint one is the one to tackle first, which is quite a steep climb.

Meanwhile I will have another series coming up soon, which will be another reasonably flat one - so watch this space.
