PLI for dogs

If it's in the news, post it here. If it isn't, and it's a load of twaddle, post it here anyway

PLI for dogs

Postby ferreter38 » Wed Mar 10, 2010 8:24 am

I don't know if any of you saw the headline on yesterday's Daily Express - I didn't manage to read all the story but from what I could gather the present government are considering making it law that every dog owner takes out PLI for their dogs. I guess the paper was scaremongering when then mentioned that insurance companies could charge up to £600 for PLI :o
Did you know that membership of Dogs Trust offers PLI for up to 10 dogs if you are a member. Membership is £20pa or £10pa for over 60s.
http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/giving/membership/default.aspx
I've just signed up, there are other benefits as well as the PLI plus you will be helping stray and unwanted dogs and unlike another well known animal charity Dogs Trust doesn't kill healthy dogs.

I heard the story on Radio 5 on the way into work yesterday.

They said it was just proposals at the moment for consultation. I cant see it being enforceable especially against the dogs it is aimed at, trophy pit staffy crosses that intimidate people.

as always it isnt bad dogs just bad owners.
Now an EX-Bargee, moved onto land,
Boat sold.....sad.

Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate,
And though I oft have passed them by, A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run, West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

You can tell it's getting near an election. What they tend to forget is that there are something like 6m dog owners in the UK.

Just because it being unenforceable doesn't mean that they won't do it :o Look at legislation regarding hand guns, that hasn't stopped people being shot. All it did was force legal owners of hand guns to surrender their legally owned guns.

<soapbox>
The govt have done a lot of stuff on the basis of "It's for your own good". Erm. No. It's not for my good as it impacts the freedoms I haved. Most of the "safety and security" laws that have been passed have been of no help in combating crime and terrorism all they've done is make criminals out of innocent individuals. What was needed was enforcement of existing legislation.

I think they most certainly haven't forgotten that! Insurance is taxed at 5%, I believe. 6m extra insurance premiums = £££ for the Treasury :P

You're more likely to get bitten by one of those than a rottie

Are you talking about that report, which said you're more likely to be bitten by a doberman than anything else (i.e. pit-bulls and rotties)?
The report's conclusion was pretty dumb, I thought, considering the two obvious flaws - first that dobermans are often employed as guard dogs which increases the likelihood that they'll bite someone considerably ('cos it's their job) and second, in the US where the study was carried out and where pit-bulls are legal (in most areas) there are vastly more pit-bull and rottie dogs out there in the general population than there are dobermans...

What report?

OK you are more likely to get by one of those snappy little sods than a doberman.
