Computer Glitch

Postby The Barrowers » Thu Mar 21, 2013 4:08 pm

When on a geocaching page on my laptop the following things have recently changed :-

1. If I click on the hint ‘Decrypt’ button it doesn’t decrypt any longer, but just returns me to the top of the page.

2. There are no maps on the right hand side of the page showing the cache location, just blank squares where they should be, yet if I then click on ‘View Larger Map’ that will show me the larger map.

3. No logs are are shown, just the icons of how many Finds & DNF’s etc. I have to click on ‘View Logbook’ which will take me to a separate page showing all the logs.

I have had the laptop for about 18 months and it has been fine up to recently. I thought it may be something to do with the security in the machine, which is Norton, and could be blocking these particular things, but I have the same in my desk top PC and that is ok.

Can anyone please suggest anything I can try?

One thing you could try before doing below, on the webpage Press F5 on the keyboard this will ask the page to refresh and see if it any different.

Maybe java playing up as i know the pages partly run on that. So maybe update of java.

That you can also clear your cookies and history etc
If using Internet Exploire go to - Tools, Internet options, Look on the first page for Browsing history.
Then press delete. This will clear up internet cache and history of what you been on and cookies.

I have the same problem at work, I suspect it's because we use a very old version of IE

Thanks to Hardnut for the advice. I already have the latest Java and IE installed, I have tried deleting cookies/history as suggested, but no difference.

Try an alternative web browser such as Firefox or Chrome and see if they behave differently.

There are a few niggles with IE and GC, I use it under IE Tab in Firefox, to log my Member finds (just logged a few from 2010 :o , 3 Megas to go as well :D ) so see those niggles. If your locked into IE ,by your employer, there is a Portable Version of Firefox, which runs directly from a USB Pen Drive, one of my Colleagues does so to Review caches, when away for work, as they will not allow any Non Company approved Software to be installed on their Lap Tops.

All of those features use Javascript to do something in your browser rather than via GC.com's web server. It might be worth double checking that Javascript is switched on at http://www.ismyjavascriptenabled.com/, although I assume you'd see other things not working (webmail etc) if it wasn't.
